Ataraxia’s fourth track to The Fox and the Flame
They never really listen
They reel you with nice enough small acts
Just give it a minute
And in the end you'll ask yourself, "what was that?"
And they say that were confused
That they need to teach you how to be used
I think with you
My view is on the exit
But I know it's useless to call out your bullshit
I don't know what to do
Not even that big 'a deal
Somethin' tells me I can't refuse
Don't wanna be rude
So I kneel
Deep down I know inside
Nothing ever was quite right
Mhmm (you think I'm oblivious?) mm (hmm)
All the messages sent that they never regret
And the laugh they expect, I'm not ever your pet
I say it's fine, what a lie
Surrounded by eyes, always lookin' behind
Never gettin' the signs, it's amazing you tried
Inescapable, every label
Was I really just made to be gazed over?
Why do you think I'm interested in you?
I'm on the brink of completely losing my cool
I don't what to do
Not even that big 'a deal
Somethin' tells me I can't refuse
Don't wanna be rude
So I kneel
Deep down I know inside
Nothing ever was quite right
Let it up, I have had enough
I keep giving my seat to misogyny
Come undone, this is more than wrong
Throw it all away, patriarchy enslaved (enslaved, enslaved)
Oooh oh
I don't know what to do
Gimme just a second to block all the dudes
They're all complete fools
Don't need to prove it
Deep down I know inside
Nothing ever was quite right
Deep down I know inside
They'll always be the one's up high
Show only my good and never the bad
Is this womanhood, living up to a man?
Behind the Scenes
This song was originally published on my Soundcloud with the title “Why Can’t I”. That version of this song has different lyrics, but the same instrumental background and melodies. That song was about a specific relationship where I felt discontent in. Later on, I reworked the lyrics to fit a more general frustration towards the patriarchy as a whole and how my experience has shaped how I see relationships. The title then changed to “Got No Shot”. As it stands, the title holds a front and center message that men cannot use and abuse me if they have no shot with me.
My resentment towards the patriarchy trickles in through the rap section of the song. I added a recording of me sharpening a knife to give the song a surprising addition. The drums in the back also give it the energy that it needs for a punchy attack.
If you’d like to hear the original version of ” Got No Shot”, it’s linked underneath.
